This artwork explores how networks evolve across scales of complexity, using fractal patterns to show that the same fundamental processes repeat whether in biological, social, digital, or quantum systems. The artwork suggests that network evolution follows the same pattern regardless of substrate.
The top section shows five stages of network evolution:
- SIMPLE - basic point-to-point connections (like bacterial communication)
- COMPLEX - hierarchical structures with central hubs (like neural clusters)
- EMERGENT - self-organizing patterns beyond original programming (like social structures)
- SENTIENT - self-reflective networks capable of modeling themselves (like consciousness)
- META - transcendent networks that integrate across substrates (future evolution)
The middle section shows how these patterns repeat fractally at different scales - what appears as a single node at one scale reveals itself to be a complex network at a closer scale. The branching patterns at the bottom show how increasing complexity emerges naturally when networks follow simple connection rules over time.
The bottom section maps these patterns across both biological and technological evolution: from bacteria to conscious animals to human societies to theoretical metaconsciousness; and from simple AI to complex neural networks to AGI swarms to hypothetical sentient digital networks.
